More than a diagnosis
A bright girl. A long road ahead. A family holding on to hope.
Sophia is only 14 years old — a freshman in high school, an avid reader, and a talented young musician who loves playing the violin and keyboard. She is the kind of girl who can disappear into a book for hours or sit down at home and play whatever sheet music catches her attention.
Then, with almost no warning, ordinary life changed.
Sophia began developing bruises on her arms and legs. At first, her family hoped it was something as manageable as anemia. But blood tests showed low hemoglobin, red blood cells, and platelets. More testing followed, and the news no family is prepared to hear arrived: Sophia was diagnosed with Pre-B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
She is now hospitalized at Children’s Medical Center at Plano, where she is receiving chemotherapy. Instead of worrying about freshman classes, her next book, or the music she wants to practice, her days now revolve around hospital rooms, blood counts, treatments, medications, and the uncertainty that comes with a serious cancer diagnosis.
Doctors have outlined an approximately 2.5-year treatment plan. Her current hospital stay is only the beginning. Afterward, Sophia is expected to return regularly for chemotherapy and other medications as part of the effort to keep the leukemia from returning.
For Daniel and the rest of Sophia’s family, the priority is simple: be beside her, help her through treatment, and give her every possible chance to recover. But a treatment journey this long also brings a growing financial burden — hospital care, medical bills, treatment-related costs, transportation, time away from work, and the many expenses that come with supporting a child through cancer care.
This fundraiser was created to help ease that burden so Sophia’s family can spend less time worrying about how to cover the next expense and more time focused on the person who matters most: Sophia.
